MSUs Safe Place Holds Inspiring Annual 5K

EAST LANSING - The weather conditions were less than ideal for this year's Race for the Place 5k.

But that didn't stop dedicated runners and supporters running and walking for a cause that's as ever important on MSU's campus.

MSU Safe Place is a program on MSU's campus that addresses relationship violence and stalking. They provide everything from counseling to advocacy groups to shelter, and it's all free of charge.

Director of MSU Safe Place Holly Rosen said that they considered cancelling the event. But once the snow turned into rain, they were hopeful people would come.

"I'm thrilled every year, this is our 24th, to see everybody come and support us," Rosen said. "Especially on a day like today which had such lousy weather. It's just heartwarming to see so many people here."

Race for the Place is the organization's largest fundraiser throughout the year and helps bring awareness and funds to the organization.

So how is MSU Safe Place holding up if everything is free of cost to people who seek their services?

"So MSU Safe Place is doing well," Rosen said. "The fundraiser helps continue to provide free and confidential services to anyone that needs it. Fundraisers like this really help."

In the wake of everything that has happened regarding sexual assault and misconduct on MSU's campus, this organization is the beacon of hope that the school needs.

"MSU is fortunate to have a domestic violence support and shelter program on campus," Rosen said. "And we just want people to know they don't have to deal with this alone. We're here to talk to anybody, provide support, shelter to anybody that needs help."
