Recent Snow and Rain Cause Flooding in Meridian Township

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers, but sometimes those excessive showers can lead to flooding. With the recent mix of snow and rain this week, many Meridian Township roads and parks are closed.

Wonch Park and Ferguson Park are both currently closed due to flooding.

The Ingham County Road Department has closed roads not only in Meridian Township, but throughout the County due to water over the road. The following roads are closed until further notice:

-Ottawa Drive and Nakoma Drive intersection
-Hillcrest Avenue - Between Okemos Road and Seminole Drive
-Nichols Road - Between Aurelius Road and Eifert Road
-Nichols Road - Between Eifert Road and Onondaga Road
-Columbia Road - Between Dietz Road and Haywood Road
-Okemos Road - Between Central Park Drive and Haslett Road
-Olds Road - Between Cooper Road and Meridian Road
-Wallace Road / Huschke Road - Between M-43 and Gramer Road
-Waldo Road - Between Burkley Road and Clark Road
-Linn Road - Between Meech Road and Dietz Road
-Nims Road - Between Meridian Road and Fitchburg Road

The Meridian Township Police Department warns drivers to not drive around the barricades and through flooded streets.

"Drivers are taking their own personal safety at risk when going through flooded areas. Not only can it cause more damage to the roadway, but also your vehicle," said Captain Greg Frenger.

According to Frenger it is a Civil Infraction violation if motorists drive around the road closure signs with a $120 fine. If somebody removes the sign it is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine.

"Six inches of water is all it takes, especially if it's moving water, six inches of fast moving water can knock you off your feet easily. Two feet of water will move your car. That's why we always tell people to turn around, don't drown, we never want to see people drive through flooded areas," said Meridian Township Fire Inspector Tavis Millerov.
