OKEMOS, MI - The Harris Nature Center (HNC) hosted a 25th Anniversary event on Saturday, July 23rd as a way to thank its supporters and celebrate its milestone. The building was open with extended hours on that day and free programs were provided to the community.
The public was able to join HNC Naturalists on a bird walk, live animal presentation, guided trail walk, story time, guided dog walk, and ended with a campfire program.
Kit Rich, former HNC Coordinator, had this to say about the center, “We’ve come such a long way from before 1997, all the way to today. From just somebody’s house out here to this beautiful nature center that’s serving so many of our residents.”
In addition to the free programs, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new pavilion, brick patio, restrooms, and observation deck that were all installed at the center.
“It’s been so much fun to watch it grow and watch it change, and to be a part of that means a lot to me,” said Kati Adams, Meridian Township Parks & Land Superintendent. “It feels incredible to be able to offer something to the public where people can come out and have a good time in the outdoors.”
