New Evidence in Mitin Trial

New Evidence in Mitin Trial

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Authorities are investigating "circumstantial evidence" that Melissa Mitin's second child is dead. Her trial is on hold until lab tests results are in from blood stains that were found in her home.

Mitin, 25, of Okemos, is accused of murdering her first child, a daughter, in December of 2013. It was discovered in January that Mitin was pregnant again shortly after the murder, but claimed to not know where the child was.

It was stated in a written motion on Sept. 24th that Meridian Township Police submitted a new warrant request "for homicide surrounding that child" at the request of prosecutors.

We reached out to Meridian Township Police who have been working hard on this investigation, but they declined to comment until lab results are in.

The Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney's Office told us that the next court hearing will be on Nov. 23rd where there will be a motion to introduce new evidence. A new trial has been adjourned until next year, however, that date won't be determined until after the Nov. 23rd hearing.

Mitin will remain behind bars and is being charged with murder and concealing the death of a newborn child. She is being held without bond and could face up to life in prison if convicted.
