MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI - Controversy surrounds Lake Lansing Park North after a proposal was released suggesting limestone paths be added to areas of the trail. Adding limestone would allow the boardwalk to be level with the trail, which in return would be more accessible.

Lake Lansing Park North has over 10 miles of trails. The area of interest in this proposal will stretch about 1.4 miles long.

Ingham County Parks officials developed this proposal because of the aging infrastructure on the trails. Although this proposal regards multiple improvements, avid trail users seem most concerned about limestone paths.

According to Tim Morgan, Director of the Ingham County Parks Department, Ingham County Parks applied to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and Michigan Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Grants on April 1, of 2021. As of now Michigan Natural Resources is reviewing all applications submitted in the state.

“They usually make announcements in December each year as to which grants are successful,” said Morgan. “So, no we have not been notified of the outcome of the grant proposals that we submitted.”

If the Lake Lansing Park proposal is approved, it is estimated to be announced around December, and the contract would be finalized in the late winter or early spring of 2022. Construction on Lake Lansing Park trails would not begin until 2023.
