Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Provides COVID-19 Update

LANSING, MI - Governor Gretchen Whitmer held a press conference on Wednesday, September 16th to provide an update on the COVID-19 pandemic. She began by speaking about the spread of COVID-19 and how it should not affect people’s ability to vote in the upcoming election. Joined by Whitmer was Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, as well as Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, to talk about the current cases of the virus in Michigan as well as voting opportunities for Michiganders.

With the ongoing spread of COVID-19 being a crucial factor for the November 3rd election, Governor Whitmer assured the people of Michigan that there is nothing to fear. She urges everyone to vote this year whether it be in person or through the postal service. Whitmer also urges legislature to pass laws that would prevent election results from being delayed due to the virus. Ballots will be sent out September 24th. As of yesterday, the Senate passed Bill 757, which allows clerks to begin processing absentee voter ballots prior to election day.

Governor Whitmer also talked about the importance of getting a flu shot this season, “We are not out of the woods yet when it comes to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether you plan on heading to the voting booth in person or voting by mail or dropping off your ballet, you can help by getting a flu shot and wearing your mask. CDC is saying, this is the most important tool that we have,” says Governor Whitmer.
