Special Needs Day Camp Hosts 42nd Year

OKEMOS - The Okemos School District has been out of session for a few weeks now, but if you walk through the door and look in the cafeteria or down hallway “A” you’ll find some classrooms still in session.

For its 42nd year. Okemos Special Needs Day kicked off its seven week summer camp on June 17th for people of all ages with special needs. Those who attend the camp participate in various activities throughout the week.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday campers take a field trip to different areas to get them out of the classroom and engaging in different activities.

“Today we went to the park” said Director Jamie DeLong. “We go to the hands on museum in Ann Arbor, we go to zoos; Different local area activities.”

Tuesdays and Thursdays they get to enjoy swimming in the high school pool.

Every afternoon, campers are split into three groups and rotate between activities such as cooking different snacks to eat, arts and crafts and various sports and games.

While it might seem like all fun and games, the kids and adults who attend are learning some important skills they can take away and use in their every day routines.

“It’s a great program,” said DeLong. “It’s a great place for individuals with special needs to go, children and adults, where they can make new friends, try new things and get out in the community and have some really great experiences.”

The camp day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each camper must pre-register online at okemosspecialneedsdaycamp.weebly.com for registration forms and more information. The camp will be running until August 9th.
