Meridian Township Farmers' Market Relocation Project Continues Moving Forward

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Plans continue to progress for the Meridian Township Farmers' Market Relocation Project.

With 45 years in operation, the Meridian Township Farmers' Market got it's start in 1974 in the dirt parking lot of the township hall, according to LuAnn Maisner, Director of Parks and Recreation in Meridian Township. The pavilion, which currently hosts the Farmer's Market, was built in 1978, Maisner said.

Due to the growth of the market, it was time for a relocation, Maisner said. The farmers' market will be relocated to the 2.5 acre green space adjacent to the Studio C Theatre by Meridian Mall. As of April 1, 2019 the transaction for the land has been made.

In addition, developing plans and raising money for construction has also been in the works.

"The plan for the site includes and large pavilion structure, playground, restroom/office building, patio courtyard and small performance stage," Maisner said. "We are also purchasing artificial ice to offer skating in the winter and during special events throughout the year. When completed, it will serve as an extension of Central Park and become a social and economic gathering place for the community."

Maisner said funding for the $1,300,000 project is being given through grants, donations and other Township funds.

"The project will go out for bid soon with construction beginning this summer," Maisner added.
