Family Caregivers Month

Family Caregivers Month

UPDATE: EAST LANSING - During the month of November, he Alzheimer's Association celebrated a special group of important people.

Alzheimer's is a disease that destroys brain cells and eventually diminishes memory, thinking, and behavioral skills. Judy McQueen is a caregiver who takes care of her husband, Vern, who suffers from Alzheimer's.

"I have a caregiver that comes in about four hours a day, sometimes more to give me a hand during the mornings," said McQueen.

Working with patients who suffer from Alzheimer's disease can be stressful, but caregivers are recognized this month for dedicating themselves to working with patients through national family caregivers month.

"I really encourage caregivers to take care of themselves," said Mcqueen. "And not to consider that something selfish, but something necessary."

Judy works closely with the Alzheimer's Association and also with Julie Duesing, the programs coordinator for the for the Alzheimer's Association.

"What we are doing is trying to keep to focus on our caregivers and the fact that caregiving is a very, very stressful roll," said Duesing.

Duesing wants to remind caregivers that it is important to take care of themselves. It is important for caregivers to get help, know what recourses are available and to visit your own doctor regular check ups.

"We need to help them understand that, in order to be the best caregiver, they need to get the best respite that they need," said Duesing.

NEX-CARE Health Systems is offering it's 5th Annual Caregiver Retreat in March 2012, for those who care for loved ones. For more information call (517) 449-9494.
