UPDATE: HASLETT - After 38 meets, Haslett finally defeated Okemos in swimming. It came down to the last event and Haslett came out ahead. Check out Meridian Magazine to see how the team has reacted to their first victory in 38 meets.

ORIGINAL STORY: HASLETT - It's just another day at the pool for the Haslett girls swimming team. Although there has been a different kind of energy at recent practices. Haslett Coach Bob Oliver knows it probably has something to do with his team's recent victory. "They were giddy. No doubt about it. Couldn't wipe the smile off their faces for a couple days. And like I said, they got good heads on their shoulders and they knew hey it's time to get back to work and get ready for this league championship." The win over their rival Okemos wasn't easy however as it came down to the final event, the 400 free style relay.
"Our A relay we knew could battle it with them but we had a couple of kids come up with some real big swims and some lifetime bests and ended up winning going away"
Leading up to the final race, believing in their team and themselves was something that the anchor of the relay team, Claire Beckett, felt was key to their success. "There was a lot of adrenaline. There was that feeling that I knew I could do it. I know our team could do it. And it was basically what we were training for." The Haslett swimmers know this was a big step for their team. The girls on the team, including Jenny Jess, feel the same way but they can't help but dwell on the victory since this has never happened for the Haslett swim team. "It's very exciting we've never been able to beat them before. So it's an amazing accomplishment we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season so to actually win was really cool." With the rematch set at the league meet, Oliver knows his swimmers will be ready to battle Okemos one more time for the league title.
