Resident Grass Height Limit in Meridian
Changed From 12 to 8 Inches

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On May 19, the Township Board in Meridian Township revised its ordinance regarding the height of grass in residential neighborhoods.

The proposed amendment would change the restriction for height of grass weeds, and other vegetation from 12 inches to 8 inches within 75 feet of a structure. If the height of the grass exceeds the new limit, residents will have five days to trip their lawns accordingly.

The correction period and height limit for those with grass at an extreme level was discussed briefly at en Environmental Commission meeting in April. It was then passed on to the board for final adoption and revision.

"Over the last five years, the number one code enforcement complaints has been tall grass with 842 complaints submitted," said Trustee Angela Wilson in the resolution.

The Board said that the motivation behind the change, was the original height limit was "unsightly" at its highest point. The grass could also "harbor mosquitoes and other insects" that may cause further concerns in the suburbs.

The ordinance was officially amended and put into effect on that Tuesday with a 6-1 vote, the only "no" vote from Trustee John Veenstra.

Clerk Brett Dreyfus is also required to publish the ordinance in which it is adopted at least once for public view before the next Township Board.
