Fall Colors/Leaf Removal Rules

UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Yellow, red, brown, and orange leaves are falling this time of year. There are many options for residents to dispose their leave, such as Granger pick-up. They are currently offering curbside pick up per bag, instead up paying for a monthly service.

LeRoy Harvey is the Meridian Township recycling coordinator. "Probably the most eco-logically friendly thing to do is to try and use it in your own neighborhood at a community garden or in your back yard."

Northwind Community Garden is currently collecting leaves. A list of other community gardens can be found on the Meridian Township Website

Another option is dropping off your leaves at Meridian Township's Recycling Center on East Lake Drive.

Meridian Township prohibits raking your leaves into the street. Brush piles are also illegal and must be removed within ten day when given notice. In some areas, residents can get a permit from the Township to burn their leaves or brush. In order to do this, the property owner must have at least one acre of land.

"Mulch is sort of a blanket term to add to the ground to control the weeds and to reintroduce nutrients," Harvey said.

Making a compost bin or mulching your yard leaves is an efficient way to recycling your leaves, even though it can be time consuming.

"Composting lets you break it down a little faster, you can create this nutrient fairly quickly, in as little as two weeks," Harvey said.
