Township Board Considers Adopting the
2012 International Fire Code

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Township Board is considering adopting the 2012 International Fire Code.

The request came from the Fire Department and Meridian Township Fire Chief Fred Cowper stated his reasons at a recent Township Board meeting. The 2012 international fire code is a modle for fire regulation that is used in many parts of the country.

"The state has recently adopted the 2012 [International] Building Code. We want to be congruent with that code and therefore by adopting the 2012 Fire Code. It makes things easier for our contractors and our builders when they look at codes to do any kind of building renovation and those kind of things," said Cowper.

Since the state adopted the building code the Township cannot make changes to it, however since the Township is responsible for adopting the Fire Code, they can make some adjustments. Cowper said most of the language in the new code is the same and there shouldn't be any significant changes.

Board members said they didn't understand the language of the code or what exactly would be changing and Trustee Milton Scales said quote "we don't sign blank checks."

The fire code is expected to be an item on next meeting's agenda.
