Perry Road To Be Paved This Month

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Perry Road is one of the few gravel roads left in Meridian Township, but paving is expected to begin in October.

According to Township Chief Engineer Younes Ishraidi, the decision came after a public informational meeting was held with residents in the area last year. Residents raised concerns including speeding in the area.

"There are no posted speed limits," Ishraidi said. "So its our understanding because of that the speed is basically 55 miles per hour which is insanely fast for a residential street like that."

According to the Michigan State Police, unmarked roads--including gravel roads--are in fact set at a speed limit of 55mph.

Other issues that that influenced the decision to pave the road included environmental concerns. Ishraindi said since the gravel road is in a developed area in the Lake Lansing watershed. The lake is vulnerable to toxic runoff from lawn fertilizers.

Paving is expected to begin the week of the 20th.

Bath Township decided to pave their portion of the road last year after a woman was hit by a car.
