MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Construction of the Van Atta Bridge is completed and its sidewalk ready for pedestrian use, thanks to a completely rebuilt structure, replacing the original built in 1928.

The old bridge was narrowed down to one lane and its older beams full of holes. The new bridge is much safer and 40 feet longer than the original, now measuring just over 100 feet in length. New concrete beams support the weight of the bridge which features a sidewalk on the west side. In addition a timber canoe dock has also been reconstructed behind the Harris Nature Center.

Ingham County Road Department Project Engineer, Daniel Troia, says the Bridge was completed July 10th after some pavement striping was delayed due to constant rain showers.

"The bridge is paid for with Federal Aid, regional bridge council funding. 95% federal, 5% local. The Township is participating in that 5% local match, and that is for the widening of the bridge and the pedestrian pathway," said Troia.

This summer, pedestrians and drivers will not only feel safer crossing the new Van Atta bridge, but will also enjoy its brand new sidewalk and canoe dock.
