MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Mixed Use Planned Unit Development permit in Meridian Township's ordinance allows for a certain amount of commercial uses in a development as established by the township board.

The idea of this permit is to integrate both a residential and commercial component. This allows convenience for residents who wish to potentially live and work in the same space, or step outside living quarters to a walkable proximity of businesses.

The Planning Commission was asked to make a recommendation to the Township Board, in which they made an approval, in regards to whether or not the amendment to add more commercial space to the site or rearrange it, as asked for by the developer. The final decision however, will be made by the board.

Although the developer asked for 62 percent of commercial floor space to be expanded onto the first floor of the building, the Planning Commission suggested it to be 65 percent.

"This is to accommodate the existing commercials there, because they want it to stay in place, but expand," said Meridian Township's Director of Community Planning and Development, Mark Kieselbach.

Kieselbach further explained that the businesses in The Hamptons of Meridian development have been successful.

"If a business is doing well in the location, lets try to keep them vibrant, active and keep them in place," he said.

The public hearing that will be taking place at the next Township Board Meeting on March 4, 2014.
