Michigan Hot-Bed for Auto Insurance Fraud

Michigan Hot-Bed for Auto Insurance
Fraud

UPDATE: LANSING - Michigan motorists are paying more for auto insurance every year--about 100 dollars more--thanks to a 200% increase in fraudulent or suspicious insurance claims since 2009.

And Michigan has become a hot-bed for the criminal activity.

"Mainly here in Michigan because of the unlimited lifetime medical benefits, and another point is 41 other states have some type of state-wide fraud authority and that means they're cracking down on fraud in their state," said Lori Conarton with the Insurance Institute of Michigan.

"That translates into those people coming to Michigan because we don't have the resources to fight it as much of these other states."

But a crackdown could be right around the corner if new legislation proposing the creation of a state-wide fraud authority becomes law.

The proposed authority would be composed of a 15-member board ranging from insurance representatives, to individuals in law enforcement agencies and financial and insurance regulations committees, among others.
