HASLETT - Dave Muhleck was awarded the Rotary Hero Award by his Rotary region. A member of the Haslett/Okemos Rotary Club, Muhleck helped develop the Weekend Backpack Program and helped it grow into what it is today. The idea is to fill discrete backpacks full of food every other Friday for elementary school kids who are on a reduced meal plan. Then they will bring the bags back and have them filled again for the next Friday. Muhleck began this program by buying 500 backpacks through his own company. The program is now active in many areas, including even outside mid-Michigan.
