Rockford

UPDATE: EAST LANSING, MI - After beating East Kentwood 11-4 in the quarter-finals and Ann Arbor Skyline 9-4 in the semi-finals, Okemos' chase for a third straight state title fell short in the state final game to Rockford.

The Rams who lost to Okemos last year in the state final game, came out on top this year beating the Chiefs 7-5 Saturday June 2nd at East Lansing High School.

In the first period, Rockford's Kara Vandawater scored the first goal of the night. Emily Wozena would sneak one in for Okemos before the end of the first period to make the score 2-1 Rams.

After the half Vandawater would score another goal for the Rams giving them an extra boost above the Chiefs. Okemos was never able to get that tying goal. Rockford beat Okemos 7-5 capturing the girls state title.

"It's been a wonderful experience," said Matt Latham, Okemos' Girls Water Polo Coach. "I couldn't of asked for a better group to coach and if I had to do it all over again, I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Katie Dudley was named player of the year and most valuable player of the East Region. Both Dudley and goalkeeper Nikki Baron received first team all-region and all-state this season.

Coach Latham believes if the girls work hard in the off season, they will be right back competing for a state title next year.
