INGHAM COUNTY - Former Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer was sworn into office today as the new Interim Ingham County Prosecutor, but will not assume  duties until July 2. 
Due to the  4th of July approaching, Whitmer took an oath in advance in the courtroom of Chief Judge Janelle Lawless. 
Lawless  states, "I am looking forward to Mrs. Whitmer taking over. I believe she possesses great  leadership skills and can restore confidence and public trust." 
Family, close friends, former colleagues, Lawyers from the  Ingham County Prosecuting Office and Whitmer's mentor 
Frank Kelly  gathered for the event. 
Whitmer was chosen as Interim Prosecutor by a panel of Ingham County Circuit Judges.
She will fill the remainder of the term of current
Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III who officially resigns July 2. 
63-year- old Dunnings is accused of pandering, engaging in the services of a prostitute and willful neglect of duty.
He  served as the Ingham Prosecutor for  close to 20 years  and won't seek re-election as the incumbent.
Whitmer says, "The goal after the end of her time in office is to have a well run professional office that she could hand off with pride."
Her term  ends December 31st and she will hand over all responsibilities to the winner of the November election. 
Whitmer is seriously considering running for Governor, but at this time her focus is on her new role and ensuring credibility to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.
