MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Most people have accepted that snow is a winter fact of life, but winter road conditions have inconvenienced many while traveling. Many residents wonder who is responsible for clearing which roads.

Kari Arend, the Communication Representative of Michigan Department of Transportation says they are mainly responsible for the routes such as US-Route and I-route.

And the county's transportation department are responsible for those main roads in each county, and also the subdivisions.

"We firstly do the primary road, such as Mash Road, Jolly Road and Okemos Road. And when we get done with those, we go through some local roads that with higher speeds," said Bill Conklin, the Manager of the Ingham County Road Department.

Meanwhile, Arend also mentioned that there are people plowing and shoveling 24 hours a day within a given week. So snow in the weekend is no difference than snow in the week days.

During the snow season, the amount of car accidents increase rapidly.

"We have 150 accidents in December, and we only have 114 accidents in the past," said Lieutenant Greg Frenger from the Meridian Township Police Department.

Frenger also said, people should drive slow and at a safe speed event. Most winter accidents are caused because people are driving too fast.
