MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - WKAR East Lansing has been a staple in sports for Lansing area residents for many years with the weekday show "Sports Talk with Earle Robinson."
"Earle Robinson is the guy who had the job, a legend in sports reporting, the man who had the job here at WKAR, who held it down for 39 years, really a legend in the business," said Al Martin, the host of WKAR's Current Sports with AL Martin.
But after Robinson's retirement from WKAR less than a year ago, Current Sports with Al Martin is taking center stage.
"I never would have thought that I would have been here," Martin said. "If you would have told me that I'd be sitting here at WKAR doing a radio show and a TV show at the same time and not be at Channel 6, I would have said you're crazy."
Martin is a Michigan State University Graduate and a former HOMTV intern who spent most of his education in television. He said that his TV background made him a bit hesitant to apply for the opening at WKAR.
Martin said that the sports program is going to change quite a bit during his time there, another reason he was so excited at the opportunity.
"One of the biggest reasons why I took the job was, I've always been a TV guy, as you know I did HOMTV, Big Ten Network, Student U," said Martin. "One of the biggest reasons I took it is because they're revamping the whole position. It wasn't just going to become a radio position. They are actually doing a TV show and the TV show kicks up next month in September and it's going to be really cool and different. They're really revamping it and they really sold me on that."
Current Sports with Al Martin airs weekdays from 1 - 2 PM, weekdays on AM 870.
