UPDATE:
OKEMOS, MI - Every year the Okemos Education Foundation sets out in search of teachers who exemplify excellence and a outstanding ability to motivate students. Okemos residents, community members, and school staff get the opportunity to nominated these types of educators in hopes of them getting recognized at the OEF Banquet Awards. This year the recipients were Deb Hamilton, Langauge Arts Teacher at Chippewa Elementary, John Olstad, Science Teacher at Okemos High School, Fred Partlow Latin Teacher at Okemos High School, Elizabeth Reed, Musical Teacher at Hiawatha Elementary, Chrissy Schoonover, Math Teacher at Okemos High School, Carmen VanAlstine, French, ELL and Language Arts Teacher at Chippewa Elementary.
According to the OEF, there was also a special recognition award presented to staff who demonstrate a passion for excellence and whose work elevates Okemos Public Schools. this year's recipients were Lyanna Hassenger, Director of Food & Nutrition, Okemos Public Schools and Kathy Hunter, (retired) Adminstrative Assistant at Okemos Public Montessori at Central. A volunteer Service Award was given to Lynne Page, Okemos High School Parent Group Treasurer for her positive impact on students, staff, and the school.
The event was held at the Country Club of Lansing where the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. There was catered food and drinks, and a violin quartette and speeches given by the recipients and their colleagues. Each award recipient received a plaque and a $1,000 grant from the OEF to be used for educational purposes.
