LANSING - Michigan State Police (MSP) announced they will be adding extra patrol officers today for the Thanksgiving holiday as part of Operation C.A.R.E., a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities.

Troopers will begin high visibility enforcement focusing on impaired driving, seat belt use, careless driving and speeding.

"We urge you to make safety a priority this Thanksgiving weekend and always," said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, Director of the MSP. "Buckling a seat belt takes just seconds and can save your life. Texts, phone calls and other distractions can wait. Designating a sober driver is simple and benefits you and everyone else on the road."

According to the State Police, Thanksgiving is the second deadliest holiday in Michigan for traffic crashes stating 2016 saw 10 fatalities during the holiday period.

The State Police encourages motorists to take extra precautions.
