LANSING - According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, 20 percent of the total U.S. methane emissions come from landfills. The EPA also estimates that food is the number one item reaching these landfills contributing to the methane gas.

Composting is one technique that can reduce the amount of food waste in the community. Similar to a weekly trash pick up, Compost Katie offers a weekly service to turn food waste into compost.

Owner of Compost Katie Woody Campbell said all residents have to do is sign up online for a subscription. Campbell explained, "It's 15 dollars a month, 50 cents a day. We stop by the house once a week; pick up all lawn waste, all food waste, boxes, pick that all up, drop them off a new bucket and take it from there." Compost Katie currently offers their services to Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, Holt, Haslett and Willimston.

Campbell went on to say that from start to finish it takes about 3 months to turn food scraps into compost. The finished compost is given to the Ingham County Land Bank and supplied to Community Gardens throughout the Greater Lansing Area.
