LANSING - The Okemos girls basketball team defeated Sexton, 62-39, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

After a few tough losses, the Chiefs got back on track with the win.

Okemos and Sexton remained close in scores during the first and second quarter, the Chiefs leading 34-23 at halftime.

Sexton turnovers in the second half caused the Okemos girls to speed past the Big Reds.

"We were very unselfish tonight, we had I think 19 assists on the night and that's a great performance to be unselfish," Okemos head coach Tyler Hursey said.

Okemos guard Laya Hartman, who as a freshman has already been contacted by some collegiate coaches, guided the team through making not only shots, but also plays that led to scoring opportunities.

"Laya's really been tremendous for us this year," Hursey said. "She's scored a lot of points, and tonight I thought she ran things on the offense pretty well and made some good defensive plays too."

Looking to continue winning, the Chiefs will face Jackson on Friday at 6 p.m., but this time, they will have home court advantage.

"We have some big league games coming up,a nd we talk everyday in practice about getting better that day, and continuing to get better during practice and at games," Hursey said.
