MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Not only is spring a time where people break out the bikes, they also take advantage of the warm temperatures and tidy up their homes.

There are a variety of products on the market to aid in the cleaning process, some of which cause what seem to be allergic reactions in certain people. But one doctor we spoke to said the symptoms people suffer aren't necessarily allergies at all.

"Most of the compounds that cause problems for people are irritating," Dr. Lawrence Hennessey of the Okemos Allergy Center said. "They often contain volatile compounds."

And Dr. Hennessey says irritants are different from allergens.

"If someone has enflamed airways from an infection, asthma from allergies, or other underlying respiritory conditions, they can be far more sensitive to the effects of chemical irritants," Hennessey said.

"Sometimes it's hard to tell what's in a product that you buy," LeRoy Harvey, Meridian Township Recycling and Energy Coordinator, said. "There might be dyes, colorings, perfumes, additives."

But Harvey says it's easy enough to make your own eco-friendly and healthy products.

According to Rodale News, you can mix water and vinegar to make an all-purpose cleaner. And for those dirty windows, they suggest using vinegar, dish soap and water. Harvey says there are a number of products to use that don't have the harsh chemicals.

"Baking soda, washing soda, some chemicals that you can get at the hardware store or Meijer can do most of-98% of what you need to do around your home," Harvey said.

"It's really trial-and-error, and, if a product is labeled hypo-allergenic, that doesn't mean that it's non-allergenic," Hennessey said.

For those who suffer severe symptoms, Dr. Hennessey says you may want to consult a physician.

If they have year-round symptoms, or, especially if they have any chest or asthma symptoms, then i really think that an allergy evaluation is indicated," Hennessey said.
