Van Atta Bridge to Close in January for Construction

Van Atta Bridge to Close in January
for Construction

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - More construction plans to hit the road at the start of the new year as the final design stages of the Van Atta bridge are close to completion. The bridge is currently down to one lane due to weight restrictions, but construction is scheduled to start on January 15th and will continue through mid-May when the bridge re-opens.

Meridian Township Director of Public Works & Engineering, Ray Severy, states that "the plan is to entirely remove the existing bridge and replace it with a new structure."

The new bridge will be a little bit wider with the addition of a pedestrian sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.

Since the bridge will be closed during the construction, residents south of the Red Cedar River and those wishing to visit the Harris Nature Center will have access to these areas by using Jolly Road instead of Grand River Avenue.
