Law Amendment Clears Up Hanging
Objects Debate

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - There has been a lot of confusion among Michigan drivers over the current laws in place regarding hanging objects on car rearview mirrors.

Prior to 2009, the state law, dubbed the "Fuzzy Dice" bill, banned all hanging objects on rearview mirrors.

Now under the new amended law, an objects hanging from the mirror must be a true vision obstruction in order to be in violation of the law.

Law enforcement officials said it ultimately comes down to a matter of common sense on both the part of the driver and the police officer.

"One thing that comes up pretty often are the handicapped parking permits," said Lt. Gary Megge, Michigan State Police.

"Those are pretty large, and those could very easily obstruct a pedestrian or a bicycle, over even another car."

The offense is classified as a civil infraction that can have a fine of $100 or more.
