Mobile Food Pantry Held May 1 for Anyone in Financial Hardship

OKEMOS - As employer parking lots sit vacant and unused, a few local organizations are getting creative to make use of the space while helping the community.

According to a news release, Delta Dental, the Greater Lansing Food Bank and McLaren Health Plan are hosting a mobile food pantry from 9 am to noon on May 1 at Delta Dental, in the parking lot east of the buildings at 4100 Okemos Road in Okemos.

“In 2020, our employees and company invested nearly $50,000 to feeding our community, and while our in-person volunteering slowed due to the pandemic, our enthusiasm and commitment to corporate citizenship have not wavered,” said Margaret Trimer, vice president of strategic partnerships for Delta Dental. “Our employees are eager to again support their neighbors and lift their spirits.”

The news release said registration for the food pantry begins at 9 am with food distribution from 10 am to noon or until food runs out.

Participation is open to anyone in financial hardship or in need of food for any reason. Food recipients should bring proof of residency, including a valid ID or addressed mail.

For the safety of everyone, all participants are asked to wear a mask if able. Masks will be available on-site if needed. For more information, call 517.449.0360.

In the news release, Michelle Lantz, CEO of Greater Lansing Food Bank, said mobile food distributions have become one of the main ways the organization provides hungry families with nutritious food.

“We are incredibly grateful to McLaren Health Plan and Delta Dental for taking the time to give back and make a difference for so many,” Lantz said.

“We take a holistic approach to caring for our members and are honored to be able to extend that philosophy to those experiencing food insecurity in the Greater Lansing area,” added Nancy Jenkins, president and CEO of McLaren Health Plan.
