Indoor Dining to Officially Resume with Precautions

LANSING - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed that indoor dining at restaurants and bars can resume on Feb. 1 with precautions in place.

Whitmer targeted Feb. 1 as a reopening date but it was dependent on the COVID-19 positivity and hospitalization rates. They have continued to drop with the positivity rate a 6.8% and declining and about 10% of hospital beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients.

Restaurants will be allowed to open at 25% capacity and no more than 100 people are allowed to dine in at one time. Masks will be required except when eating or drinking and no more than six people can eat at a table. Restaurants will have to collect contact information in case of a COVID-19 exposure. There will be a 10 p.m. curfew and it is seated service only.

“I know this pandemic has hurt our restaurant owners, our restaurant workers and all of their families,” Whitmer said. “I want to thank those who made incredible sacrifices and did their part on behalf of protecting our communities from COVID.”

Concessions at movie theaters, bowling alleys, stadiums and casinos can also resume on Feb. 1 and the capacity limits of large stadiums have been increased from 250 to 500 people.

Whitmer said she has asked the legislature for $10 million to reimburse restaurants that go through the COVID-19 safer dining program that upgrades or recommends upgrades to their HVAC ventilation systems to improve air circulation and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
