Lansing 5:01 to Host At-Home Concert Celebrating 5/01 Day

LANSING, MI - Lansing 5:01 is a nonprofit organization that aims to highlight the best of what Lansing has to offer, and every year they host an in-person event on May 1st in order to kickoff their Summer Showcase Series, which includes a variety of events throughout the summer season. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they've had to change their plans for this year's 5/01 Day.

They did this by creating the Lansing Live-A-Thon that will host an at-home concert to celebrate 5:01 Day. The event takes place on Friday, May 1st and will be live on their Facebook page. It will last from 5:01pm to 9:00pm and will feature 11 Lansing-based musicians, as well as special guests. This virtual event will also help support local nonprofits and businesses impacted by COVID-19.

"Lansing is a community that's been ignited by our small businesses, artists, and place makers who have each played a unique and vital role in cultivating a place we all know and love,” said Chris Sell in a press release. “Our region, state, and the nation are experiencing unprecedented circumstances and an uncertain future. Once our new normal returns, we want these small businesses, entertainment opportunities, and artisans to still be pillars in our community."

Though 5/01 Day and the summer events will be different this year, the Lansing Live-A-Thon will provide a way for community members to safely celebrate all things Lansing. Sell states that, "Without our support now, the places that make Lansing home may be in jeopardy."

Lansing 5:01 has set a goal to raise a minimum of $5,001 for 10 destination nonprofit organizations by midnight on May 1st. The participating nonprofits include:

-Fenner Nature Center
-Harris Nature Center Foundation
-Impression 5 Science Center
-Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center
-Lansing Symphony Orchestra
-Potter Park Zoo
-REACH Studio Art Center
-R.E. Olds Transportation Museum
-Wharton Center for Performing Arts
-Woldumar Nature Center

Joshua Holliday, the Communications and Marketing Director for Lansing 5:01 says, "We know the coronavirus pandemic has taken its toll -- financially and emotionally -- on our community. Our hope is that this virtual concert will both financially support local artists and small businesses while bringing an evening of joy to Lansing."
