Park Trail Upgrades

Park Trail Upgrades

UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - In Meridian Township, approximately 20 miles is considered park trails and some residents raise concern on trails with crushed concrete.

Bikers say it makes biking slow and runners say it seems unstable underfoot for running and even for walking. However, only a few trails are paved with crushed concrete and there are major advantages of having paved trails for resident's safety.

Director of Parks and Recreation in Meridian Township, LuAnn Maisner says residents feel more comfortable having paved trails than nature trails because they feel safe. "Residents feel more comfortable heading and using that trail because they know there's something defined and they can head back where they started."

Other than resident safety, crushed concrete is beneficial for protecting trees as well. Maisner said, "It helps reduce erosion on our trails because when erosion happens, a lot of trees' roots are protruding and the trail covers them and protect them."
